This day saw the fulfillment of the desire to see Sri M in person.
Guruji was, by his own admission, uncharacteristically late. Without fanfare he quickly settled into the business that he needed to accomplish. The summary
exposition of a part of the 18th chapter on moksha sanyasa yoga was simple and to the point.
The talk was centered around the 3 basic types of human beings - Sattwic, Rajas, Tamas. His explanation of the terms was new for me. Our mental models of the world can be divided into three kinds corresponding to the three types - goodness, egoistic action and anchored n materialism as the sole basis for living. The Sattwic type are ruled by goodness. The Rajasic types are dedicated to servicing the needs of the ego. The Tamasic type discount anything that is outside the materialistic world. These are by no means mutually exclusive categories. They only indicate the broad contours of the three human types. The actions that emerge from these models accumulate karma.
In a broad sense, acting in this world is not a choice open to us. For instance, we breathe, the body systems function and even when we make a choice not to engage
we are, in a sense, acting in this world. Work has to be performed. Giving up work should be based on the right motivation. A person should not renounce the
world because of the difficulty inherent in living. The businessman who closes his liquor business based on the understanding (as opposed to rationalizing) that
he is harming society is rightly motivated.
The talk closed with a reference to the most important question couched in terms that mirrors a human dilemma. Given the complexity of these various categories and
their application to our lives, how is one to act in this world ?
Why did I put this up ? An egoistic need perhaps.
