It is impossible for ordinary mortals to develop bhakti for an entity/consciousness that animates several universes and beyond.
For developing bhakti Krishna as a person or as and Avatar is indispensable.
For Yogis it is a different story altogether.

but you have to think of duality first. And then think of mutually attractive duality. Then after considerable unity of tat and tvam the duality may be lost and tat may be experienced as a pure consciousness.

Hazrat Mohammad may have had the taste of Krishna Consciousness, but many followers believe it theoretically and land up becoming quite intemperate, because it is unnatural to do so without a Guru's guidance and constant inspiration.

Gurudev the mythology also states that krishna and Arjuna both were Rishis known as Nar Nara in their previous Birth.

Ofcourse all mythology has esoteric meanings and it is narrated for easier understanding of yoga I have read this statement some where long back

But cannot rule out the possibilities of the existence of the RISHI'S with out them there is no RACHANA or LILLA

I think Lord Vishnu. In Geetha Krishna even mention that he is not mere Krishna in his human form he is everything - the super power
