The tree-planting drive on 1st July 2019 was organised at the Botanical Garden of Fergusson College. Ms. Mukta Tilak, Mayor of Pune city; Ms. Rubel Agarwal, Assistant Municipal Commissioner; and Mr. Sharad Kunte, Chairman DES inaugurated the event and planted the saplings, along with Mr. Nandan Bal, from The Satsang Foundation. Around 600 students of the Botany and Zoology departments of Fergusson College, with professors and staff, planted 1000 saplings with full support of volunteers who participated in the planting. All the planted saplings including medicinal plants are of native origin, which ensures maximum survival and blends with the natural surroundings.
With the good learning received from last year’s tree plantation, extra care could be taken this year in preparing for the tree plantation. Trenches were created in the right places so that the flowing rainwater wouldn’t damage the plants, yet the ground water would remain available for a longer period through the year.
MyTree, an initiative by Sri M, seeks to fulfil the aim of Manav Ekta Mission (an initiative by Satsang Foundation) for promoting sustainable living through tree plantation. It promotes Manav Ekta (oneness of humanity) by encouraging an individual/community-led partnership to plant trees, thereby ensuring a sustainable relationship with nature. The Pune volunteers shared the MyTree concept with the students and teachers, listing out its true purpose and significance, which was well received.
